How much material do I need for my mold or casting?
Material is sold and rated by volume yield (e.g. cubic inches or cc per unit), listed on each product page. Two quick methods to estimate what you need:
- Water displacement : submerge your master in a measuring container of water; the rise in water level is roughly the volume of material your casting needs. For a block mold, fill the empty mold box (with the master inside) with water, measure it, then subtract the master's volume.
- Calculate the box: length × width × height of your mold box in cubic inches, minus the master's volume. Convert to the product's yield to find how many units to buy.
Always round up: Mix a little extra (5–10%). Running short mid-pour may mean a ruined part, since you often can't cleanly add a fresh batch onto setting material. Our website has a built-in volume calculator for the common product sizes.
